International Day of the Voting Rights for All

This Friday 26 April, the J'y suis, j'y vote! collective in conjunction with the European network Voting Rights for All Residents (VRAR), partners of ANVITA, are celebrating the 4ᵉ edition of International Day of the Voting Rights for All Residents in Paris.

26 April was chosen in reference to the "savage" referendum for women's suffrage organised in France by feminist activists on 26 April 1914.

In France, since the creation of the "J'y suis, j'y vote" collective in 1979 by associations and trade unions, the fight for a lively democracy that includes foreign residents continues. Given this context, the "J'y suis, j'y vote!" collective and the VRAR network are organising the International Days of Voting Rights for All in Paris from 26 to 28 April 2024, with the support of the City of Paris. The programme this Friday includes a press conference, a citizens' vote, followed by the announcement of the results at the Town Hall of the 11th arrondissement, where the signatory cities of the declaration for the voting rights of foreign residents will also be announced.

ANVITA relayed the VRAR network's call to Mayors to its members. More than 35 French local authorities, the majority of which are members of ANVITA, signed the declaration in favour of the voting rights of their foreign residents, thus demonstrating their commitment to a democracy inclusive of all.

"We, the signatory cities, see our municipalities as places where human rights can be put into practice and are convinced that a lively democracy is fundamentally based on the active participation of all, the inhabitants of our cities".
